Regina Sharit was the epitome of resilience and strength. Born in Radom, Poland, she survived the Holocaust, but tragically lost her parents, brother, two sisters, her sister Esther’s newborn baby and four-year-old son. Only her sister Eva survived and the two lived close by in Queens for many years. Regina outlived her loving husband Harry Sharit who passed away in 1985. Regina is survived by her three children and their spouses – daughter Fay Sharit and husband Dave Altman of Glen Rock, NJ, daughter Rochelle Sharit and husband Wayne Pastel of Boston, and her son Marty Sharit & wife Eileen Stauber of Fort Lee, NJ. She was blessed with six grandchildren – Harry & Elana Altman, Gabe & Ethan Pastel and Hannah & Rachel Sharit. Regina was a hard worker. She invested in and managed real estate and was a landlord into her early nineties. With less than a high school diploma, her common sense and ability to take risks, Regina succeeded in business. While in her fifties, she was inspired by the abundance of bikers in Amsterdam to buy her first bicycle. Regina rode all over the neighborhood and became known as the ‘bike lady’. Regina loved to dance. After her husband Harry passed away, she went to the city weekly for dances. Other days were spent in the local library in Flushing where she read the NY Times & Wall Street Journal. After living in her Flushing home for 50 years, Regina moved closer to family to an independent living community in Teaneck returning to NJ where her journey to America began many years ago. Regina’s kind spirit and keen wisdom will be missed. Contributions in her name can be made to the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington DC or the Museum of Jewish Heritage, A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in NYC.
