Raised in Paterson, NJ, Joe attended the local public schools before transferring to the New York Military Academy from which he graduated in 1946. While completing his pre-med studies, he obtained a B.S. degree in chemistry from Seton Hall College. Joe then went on to receive his M.D. from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 1955.
Joe interned at Hackensack Hospital followed by a medical residency at the East Orange VA Medical Center and at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ serving as Chief Medical Resident.
Following his medical residency he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army stationed at Governor's Island in New York, NY from 1955 to 1961.
In 1961 he opened a private medical practice in Hackensack, NJ and was on staff at Hackensack Hospital for 55 years. He also volunteered his services at Bergen Pines County Hospital to provide care for those patients who otherwise couldn't afford quality medical care. Joe was a firm believer in the science and art of medicine. Being compassionate, honest, kind, and sincere were very important to him. As such, he cherished his medical practice and always considered his patients to be his friends. In 1997 he joined Forest Healthcare Associates in Paramus, NJ where he practiced until his retirement from the medical field at the end of 2014.
In 1964, Phyllis and Joe built their family home in Oradell, NJ where they resided together for the rest of their lives. Joe was an enthusiastic sports fan and grew up following the New York Baseball and Football Giants. His true passion, however, was football and he continued following the Giants until his final days. He looked forward to discussing the games on a weekly basis with his son David and the rest of the extended family. An avid sportsman, Joe enjoyed playing golf and going fishing with his family. As an animal lover, poodles were always a family favorite.
