Murray Zankel
Friday, 31 December 1926 - Wednesday, 21 November 2018
Funeral Date: Friday, 23 November 2018

Murray Zankel, longtime resident of the Passaic-Clifton area, died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91 in his residence at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, New Jersey on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The son of Rose and Louis Zankel, Murray was born on December 31, 1926 and raised in Passaic. He attended Passaic High School, where he met his future wife of 70 years, Beryl Cohen. Murray served in the Navy during the Second World War. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to Union College in Schenectady, where he completed his bachelor's degree in 1948. Murray and Beryl married that same year. They raised their three daughters in Clifton, where he built a busy livelihood as an insurance broker and financial advisor. He retired in 1994, the same year Beryl retired as Superintendent of Passaic Schools. They enjoyed 15 years in Florida before moving back to New Jersey in 2013.
In his youth an avid tennis player and swimmer, Murray later became known as a vitamin guru well before it became the rage. He was generous with advice for friends and family about how to get healthy and live a long life, always ready with tips on diet and supplements. He loved art, sculpture, color and clothing, bridge and chess.
Murray is survived by his wife, Beryl Cohen Zankel, their three daughters, six grandchildren and their families: Joyce and Dave Lindorff (Ariel and Jed), Wendy and Michael Yamin (Tyler and his wife Jessica, and Shelby), and Lesley and Daniel Glowinsky (Matthew and his wife Kaleesha, and Michelle and her husband Frank Ferraioli). Entombment was on November 23, 2018, at the Sanctuary of Abraham and Sarah in Paramus, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can made to his alma mater, Union College, in Schenectady, New York (518-388-6175). Condolences may be sent to Beryl Zankel, Jewish Home at Rockleigh, #K207, 10 Link Drive, Rockleigh, NJ 07647.
