With 95 years of life and love, Leon Herskowitz of Hallandale Beach, Florida, and Manalapan, New Jersey, passed away on March 29, 2021. A Holocaust survivor who, by 1945, was the sole survivor of his family. Devoted husband of the late Tamara Herskowitz; loving father of George Herskowitz, Adel Radzely, and Rita Kukafka. Cherished grandfather and the coolest ever great grandfather. Former President of the Lodzer Young Men’s Benevolent Society arrived in America in 1951 with his young family. He built a very successful manufacturing business and real estate company in Brooklyn, New York. He was a notable force in contributing to Holocaust remembrance and was a significant supporter of Israel. Most importantly, he was kind and compassionate, loving, and faithfully invested in Jewish life.
Despite all the horrific things he experienced in the ghetto and the most infamous concentration camps, including Auschwitz, Leon was strong, resilient, and had a heart filled with love. What does it take to rebuild again? To be giving, inclusive, the one to listen, empathize, and always “be there” when needed? That question does not have a simple answer, but his courage and the strength and wisdom he brought to his family are parts of the answer. With wife Tamara’s unwavering love and support for over 60 years, 3 children, their loving spouses, 6 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, Leon built a strong foundation for us. We each stand on the strength of Leon, bonded together, with a sense of value, “never again,” and determination for making a better world.
Graveside funeral services are being held for the family at 11AM Friday, April 2, 2021 at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ.
