Harold Hirshberg
Wednesday, 11 December 1918 - Tuesday, 18 September 2018
Funeral Date: Thursday, 20 September 2018

Harold Murray Hirshberg, an intrepid entrepreneur, devoted family man and lifelong New Jersey resident, died at home in Park Ridge surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. He was 99.

He was born December 11, 1918, in Paterson and attended Rutgers University, where he earned a bachelor's of science in business administration and a master's of arts degree. He had an adventurous youth that included kayaking from Canada to Lake Champlain and travels to South America and the Wild West.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked on a Colorado ranch and tried his hand at the export-import business before marrying and becoming the CEO and owner of Federal Supply Corp. of Paterson. Upon retirement, he acquired and rehabilitated real estate and multiple businesses.

Guided by a sharp moral compass and optimistic outlook, he believed that life meant "different things at different times" and felt grateful that much of what others suffered, he escaped. He overcame health challenges to create security for his family and relished in the devotion of his wife and family.

He was a generous philanthropist and served on the boards of Barnert Hospital and the YMHA of Bergen County as well more than 60 years on the Cedar Park Cemetery board.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 68 years, Elise Hirshberg; his son, Jeffrey Hirshberg (Shelley); his daughter, Amy Hirshberg Lederman; grandchildren Danielle Euler (Hunter), Jeremy Hirshberg (Shelley), Jacob Hirshberg, Joshua Lederman and Lauren Lederman (Blaire); and great-grandchildren Archer, Garrison, Miles and Eli.

A private graveside service for immediate family was held at Cedar Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Jewish Guild for the Blind or  the Southern Poverty Law Center.
